Rich Nigerians are ordering pizza from London

There is apparently the reality facing a number of Nigerians who have reportedly been ordering pizza from London and having it delivered 4,000 miles via British Airways flights. That’s some serious pizza dedication.

The rather unusual claims came from the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, 71, who announced at Senate Committee earlier this week: “Do you know, sir, that there are Nigerians who use their cellphones to import pizza from London?

“They buy in London, they bring it on British Airways in the morning to pick up at the airport.

“It is a very annoying situation and we have to move a lot faster in cutting down some of these things.”

His statements were in reaction to the Nigerian government’s plans to cut down on the importation of goods, as it is exceeding exportation and allegedly damaging the country’s economy.

Regardless of the context, the claims that BA moonlights as a pizza delivery service has led to ridicule online.

One Twitter user wrote, “Dear @British_Airways, how come you didn’t tell us you run a pizza delivery service to Nigeria? Is there an app for this?”

Others were quick to question what the problem was: “If a Nigerian wants to import pizza from Jupiter, America, wit his money, that is his business. All the Government have (sic) to do is tax him/her for luxury goods.”

Another even went on to point out previous statements made by Ogbeh, writing: “Same guy said he wants to import grass for Nigerian cows from Brazil. Same guy said Nigerians eat too much rice. Same guy said NSCDC will be deployed to farms to solve farmers/herders violence.”

So whether Nigerians have in fact been paying through the roof to have pizza delivered to the country or this is simply a tall tale is not entirely clear – but it’s certainly got people appreciating the ease of modern delivery services.
